In February, students from
the Connected Barge Partnership (Hanson Academy, Grove House and Swain House
Primary schools) along with students from The Lighthouse Group, were invited
to take part in the 'design a bunting' competition by Graham Thorpe. The
theme was 'Great Britain’; this was expanded to incorporate explorers,
pirates, the British Empire and Commonwealth countries. Over 250 students
participated in this new and exciting learning opportunity which involved
looking at different peoples and cultures,
climates....music...dance...religions and traditions.
12 winners were selected by
senior staff from the participating schools and invited to work with a
community artist onboard the Angus Ferguson. The students took elements from
the bunting and produced seven large banners for the boat, using Chinese
silk fabric and fabric paint.
The festival was a huge
success with over 400 people taking the time to look around the boat and
find out what she was all about. It was lovely to see many staff from all
four schools along with many students who came with their families to
proudly show them their work on display.
So a big thank you to everyone who supported this
project and to coin a phrase 'didn’t we do well?’
Looking forward to our next venture,
Graham Thorpe
Community Boat Manager/Skipper.
